The Franklin Club was organized by members of the Class of 1852 in 1848 "considering the importance of proficiency in the art of writing and public speaking [...] for the purpose of securing this end form a society..." Members presented an oration or an essay or participated in extemporaneous debate at the weekly meetings. The celebration of the 150th anniversary of the decision of the U.S. Supreme Court in the Dartmouth College Case was held on April 9, 1969, in the Court of Claims, Washington, D.C.; the celebration also commemorated the career of Daniel Webster, the advocate who defended the case before the Supreme Court.
